Welcome to Le Hameau Baubet

Welcome. Le Hameau Baubet, translates as The Hamlet of Beautiful Rivers, as the Norsemen or Vikings called it approximately 700 years ago. This small Viking settlement of just five abodes with a boulangerie, stables, cow shed and a cider house is nestled between the two rivers La Douve and La Gloire. Daniel, the present owner, bought the run down little hamlet in 2002 has lovingly rebuilt and restored the property. This project was finished in 2012 and opened for business the following spring in 2013...

Beautifully renovated and stylishly furnished into two chocolate box cottages in a fantastic setting with three bedrooms and three en suite bathrooms in one and next door a one bedroom version for couples... an ideal all year round rural holiday location for couples, groups of friends, or families in well appointed and flexible accommodation.

The interiors and beautiful gardens have all been created with a touch of theatre by the owner Daniel Parker, an Oscar nominated and BAFTA award winning make-up artist in the film industry. The results are delightful cottages full of personality and wonderful attention to detail. The farm itself is tucked away in a beautiful countryside location where children and pets can play in safety. The cottages are ideally placed for visiting the Mont St Michel, Bayeux, and the D-day Landing Beaches, or just enjoying the beauty of Cotentin area with it’s many walks and gorgeous empty white sandy beaches and dunes. If you are a fan of the French street markets you can find one available every day nearby.

With 200km of accessible coastline even in summer you can find a quiet spot, and most beaches are dog friendly. If you are keen on cycling there is a network of cycle routes that can be joined close to the house and walking is exceptional with many well planned coastal and inland sites to see. The cottages both have free Wi-Fi access and a large selection of information for local activities are in both cottages which should cover all your needs and possible adventures out into the Cotentin.

The cottages have ample parking to the side of the property.

Négreville is a commune of about 800 inhabitants, a typical French/Norman village of low and long rural stone houses, longères, manor houses and working farms and two beautiful XIII century châteaus, Château De Pont-Rilly and Château Darnetal. Nestled between 2 rivers (La Douve and La Gloire, hence the name of the two cottages) the domaine of Négreville was confiscated from the Wac family in the 12th century for declaring their allegiance to the King of England at the time.

The farm is just north of the village and is set within 13 acres of gardens and pasture, containing a large outside lawn area with young and old woodland and an orchard. The fields to the rear are mostly left to the bees and local wildlife, including deer and the many wild birds, as this is largely preservation land and cannot be farmed. Of the two rivers the La Gloire is easily assessible to the cottages with a walk through the wild pasture. The farmable grassland is given to our local sheep to nibble at all year round as the mild weather and winters means they can enjoy the green grass in all seasons.

Daniel and Manuela live in the main farmhouse and are there as often as their busy schedules allow. The cottages and grounds are cared for by Manon and our fellow gardeners Bastien and Eric and so there is generally someone around but rest assured your cottages have their own private spaces without intrusions.

The restoration of the farm has taken 12 years with the intention of restoring all the buildings as sympathetically as possible to reflect their history, whilst updating them to meet the requirements of modern living. It has been an adventure, but along with the help of local craftsmen and friends they have reinvigorated this beautiful property. We hope you will find the materials and workmanship fit the luxury holiday accommodation description.

Set on the edge of the WW2 Landing zone these cottages have the best of both worlds’, beautiful Normandy countryside, fishing ports etc. along with the rich history that Normandy has on offer. Equidistant from the unspoilt east and west coastlines of the Cotentin peninsula the cottages are ideally situated to explore this beautiful region. The property is situated between two lovely market towns, Valognes (known as the Versailles of the north on account of it's beautiful architecture,) and Bricquebec, with its ancient castle from the 100 years war dominating the skyline. To the east the WW2 landing beaches are within easy reach. To the west the chic resort of Carteret is a must for great restaurants, boutiques, with endless sandy beaches, wild dunes and dramatic cliffs on either side. Port Racine, Europe's smallest fishing port, Cherbourg with the forts that bankrupted Louis 16th, Napoleonic forts along with Field Marshal Rommel’s fortifications…The Atlantic Wall. The Bayeux Tapestry, Barfleur, where William the Conqueror set sail from to conquer England, St Vaast la Hougue a UNESCO site... and of course Mont Saint-Michel...they are all here and all just a drive away!

Inland, the landscape is defined by traditional agricultural practices, which over the centuries have created “the bocage”, a well preserved network of small fields, hedgerows and ancient sunken lanes. In these gorgeous little fields and on the marshlands to the south you will find the famous dairy herds that are the backbone of Norman farming and the world-renowned Camembert and crème fraîche and other local delicacies that must be sampled along with a good bottle of cider (or Calvados!) purchased from one the many local producers and markets. Normandy boasts fine Manoirs, Châteaux and gardens, many of which are open to the public.

The Owners… Daniel and Manuela.

Daniel, make-up artist and an epicurean and chef, having worked in the kitchens of the three Michelin Star Marco Pierre White and was head chef of Château Isle Marie. He fell in love with the area whilst working on the HBO/ Spielberg’s “Band of Brothers “ (the epic series made in 2001 which describes the 101st parachuting into the area the night before the D-Day landings and their heroic contribution to WW2). Because of this and the fascinating history of the area Daniel settled here and is now where he calls home. Manuela is a doctor of traditional and natural medicine, Ayurveda and acupuncture, practices healing yoga, teaches all around the world and finds peace at home with Daniel . Evenings at the fireplace or morning in the garden nourish the heart and make the soul sing.The peacefulness of the countryside and the emptiness of the local beaches combined with a way of life that has changed little over the last few hundred years makes it ideal retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. “Because I work in film production, my work schedule can be quite hectic and unpredictable, and it is with a huge sigh of relief that I return to my peaceful haven to unwind...” We hope you will enjoy the farm and the surroundings as much as we do.

GETTING here and how to reach us...

By Road;

We are based in the La Manche peninsular of Normandy , about 25km south of Cherbourg in the commune of Négreville, between Valognes and Bricquebec. From whichever direction you are coming, Caen or Cherbourg, you need to head towards Valognes.

From Caen... take the N13, direction to Cherbourg. After approximately an hour you will come to a sign to turn off to Valognes, do not take this, but instead continue for about a kilometre and take the next turning marked for Bricquebec. At the top of the ramp turn left onto the D902. After approximately 7 kilometres you will reach the village of Négreville and just after the speed sign marked 70 you find a a crossroads, turn right onto the D146. Follow this road around a couple of tight corners, up the hill until you reach a Y junction at the top, bear left (this is still the D146), in the direction of La Croix Jacob. Go down the hill, at the bottom there are two sharp corners, please take care as they are totally blind, you will then cross a small bridge over the River Gloire. After this there are two driveways on the right. Please take the second driveway and go to the top. You have reached La Ferme Baubet and Les Belles Rivières.

From Cherbourg... take the N13 south towards Caen for about 20 kilometres. On reaching the sign posted Valognes turn off. There is a back route but you could easily get lost and so we would highly recommend that you enter Valognes and take the D902 towards Bricquebec from there. Proceed into the centre of town until you reach a large roundabout and turn right onto the D902 and direction of Bricquebec. Once you have left Valognes and after approximately 7 kilometres you will reach the village of Négreville and just after the speed sign marked 70 there is a crossroads, turn right onto the D146.
